I Wanna See My Abs Again Before I’m 50

We’re goal-driven creatures and fitness is all about setting goals. My goal these days is this: I wanna see my abs again before I’m 50! A few months I ago I turned 49. For most of the past year I had been working out quite steadily and I have trimmed a fair bit of weight off. At Christmastime a number of people commented on the fact that I had lost weight since the last time they had seen me.

However, when I look in the mirror I still have a ways to go before I get to the abs most fitness people have. My goal is to get right down to my abs before the end of 2014.

So I haven’t seen my abs in over ten years. I was in pretty good shape around 1999 when I weighed about 190 and had a pretty low BMI. I want to get to that point or close to it by the end of this year. My birthday is December 4.

So, there are a few obstacles in the way:

I love food
I don’t love just love food. With me, there’s something special about it. Okay, it’s just the taste. But my wife is a great cook, which you wouldn’t know from the way she looks and the way she eats. In fact I’m snacking on delicious baked Pita chips – a house specialty – as I write this. The fact that she cooks great meal after great snack after great meal makes it hard not to eat... and overeat.

She also cooks things with cheese sauce, cooks things that are deep fried, cooks things that are sweet and things that are fattening, all of them delicious. So you see the challenge here.

The last time I saw my abs was years ago. Ye-e-ears.
I was in the best shape I’ve ever been in around 1999, 2000, when I had my last heavily physical job. That’s close to fifteen years ago, and since then nothing but sedentary jobs like the jobs most people have these days. Getting in shape is easier when you don’t sit around for a living, get in your car at the end of the day, spend a while in traffic then get home and eat. This describes most people’s lives I know.

I love coffee
I know this is bad. I really should cut back or even quit. I usually take a spoon of sugar and cream in my coffee – and I have probably five a day. (At least. Yeah, really.) So that’s either another challenge or an obstacle that’s going to make it more difficult for me to see my abs again before I’m 50.

Beer

I don’t love just love beer. With me…. Ha. So I don’t drink nearly as much beer as I used to, but beer is fattening and I know that I can feel the weight added after a night of even mild indulging.
