What’s Your Fitness Calling?

June 24th, 2014 No comments

Fitness of any kind is a great discipline for your body.

Stay fit in a way you enjoy

Whatever you do, whether it’s running, working out, martial arts, etc., regularly disciplining yourself to get out and get active is richly rewarding. Choosing a fitness discipline can be a key aspect of making fitness work for you and setting yourself up for long term commitment and success. Obviously, picking a sport you love to regularly participate in is a great way of committing yourself.

Think about all the things you really love to do then find how to make that what I will call your “fitness calling.” Personally, for example, I love nature, and walking with my wife and my dog through the woods and pathways near my home in Kitchener, Ontario is one way that I keep active and stay healthy.

When I’ve tried to just do what everyone else was doing – i.e. jogging – I could never get over the fact that I hated it, that I didn’t seem built right for it and there was absolutely no joy in it for me. Of course, I go to the gym, which is a bit boring I guess, but I push myself every time I go to the gym and I love the exercise bike and visualising in my mind riding down back country roads or biking through woods. Some might argue with me, but I think you need to pick a fitness discipline that you’re truly passionate about. That’s one way of thinking of the phrase a “fitness calling.”

Aside from choosing a fitness discipline, you can also channel your passion into a career. Within the fitness industry, there are thousands of career tracks you could take. Personally, I believe in the old idea of “calling” or vocation, something that you feel personally compelled to do and be. I know that my own personal calling is to write and publish and my role as publisher of this site is a perfect fit with that.

Other people obviously feel compelled to be a personal trainer, perhaps following a calling related to teaching or helping others. Other examples of people I see following their calling are people in physiotherapy or people who teach or coach. Not all are so traditional, though.

It’s great to love fitness but what is your calling in the world of fitness?

Lose Fat the Natural Way

June 12th, 2014 No comments

It may sound too good to be true, but there are certain things you can eat or drink that will spike your metabolism, trigger fat-releasing hormones and eliminate nasty toxins that prevent you from losing weight. Having said that, remember that you can expect good results only if you consume them as part of a healthy diet. Here are some of the most potent natural fat burners.

Broccoli

Broccoli rabe contains phytonutrient sulforaphane, which stimulates an enzyme that orders fat cells to burn fat. If you are lost as to how to consume it, you can sauté it with a bit of chili flakes and lemon zest, mix it together with Italian sausage or combine it with summer squash, pine nuts, mint, lemon juice, and a few drops of quality olive oil.

 Avocado

The much-maligned fat found in avocado is actually a powerful fat burner, as its monounsaturated fats plump up cell membranes, facilitating communication between cells and the fat-burning hormones. Additionally, it switches off your body's fat storage hormones and boosts your metabolism by safeguarding the energy-producing segment of cells from the damage done by free radicals. Bring that guacamole!

Wild Salmon

If you consume wild salmon on a regular basis, this can help you significantly reduce abdominal fat. Salmon is rich in omega-3s, which help improve insulin sensitivity and consequently trim fat from your waistline. This fish also activates the thyroid hormone, speeding up your metabolism. You can poach salmon and accompany it with the watercress and grapefruit salad, or simply eat smoked salmon with mustard and dill.

 Coconut Oil

Coconut oil abounds in medium-chained-triglycerides (MCTs), which our bodies preferentially use for energy, thus reducing the chances of them being stored as fat. There have even been claims that the consumption of this oil causes greater abdominal fat loss than the intake of olive oil, over a 16-week period. Naturally, this doesn't mean you should ditch olive oil entirely, as it has other benefits, but use coconut oil for cooking and olive oil for, say, salad dressing.

Coffee

Coffee stimulates adrenaline, sending a message to your fat storage to burn fat. If you drink it 20 minutes before a set of workouts, it will also act as an ergogenic aid, allowing you to exercise more intensely. But bear in mind that you should make it black and caffeinated and avoid pouring milk in it because it reduces the fat-burning potential. Furthermore, if you take more than a cup a day, it may well start to negatively affect your body's ability to control insulin, which is its fat storage hormone.

 Tea

There are certain types of tee that can help you lose weight. They usually come as blends of natural ingredients which contribute to fat burning; for instance, a potent slim tea would be a combination green tea, cassia seeds, roses, chrysanthemum and lotus leaf. Such teas are really quite tasty, allowing you to enjoy losing weight. One cup tea will give a natural boost to your energy levels keeping you on the go throughout your day. If you drink a cup each morning this will get your brain pumping and your blood flowing.
